Fiber optic cable and the future of earthquake detection

The cableoptical fiber It is the backbone of the Internet. Currently, the line is being builtoptical fiberlongest in the world between Humboldt County and Singapore to improve global connectivity and local broadband service.
Along with the installation of this long transpacific cable, there is an effort to expand Internet access to rural regions of Humboldt County by installingoptical fibre wires shorter along our roads. There is one such cable along Old Arcata Road between Arcata and Eureka.
Theoptical fibre wires They can detect changes in the earth during earthquakes. The researchers are investigating how the optical parameters of the cable change when it is shaken by an earthquake. With the cooperation of the county, the city of Arcata, PG&E and local landowners, these researchers installed about 50 seismometers, instruments that respond to noise and ground movements, along the new line. They are conducting a multi-month evaluation of the line, detecting even the smallest earthquakes that occur daily within our highly seismic area. Cal Poly Humboldt geology students have been part of the seismometer installation, battery replacement and data recovery. They will also participate in future data analysis.
